Coffee Review: Intelligentsia Heliconias Bourbon

Intelligentsia sent us over some coffees to review awhile back out of their offerings for coffee obsessed individuals. Intelligentsia is known for their top rated barista’s and high quality coffee roasts. So now that this Heliconias Bourbon blend bag is empty from multiple sipping sessions, what did we think about this Columbian based bean from Intelligentsia?

  • Roaster: Intelligentsia
  • Blend: Finca Santuario, Columbia: Heliconias Bourbon
  • Farmer/Farm: Camilo Merizalde
  • Location: Cauca
  • Grown at Elevation: 1863 – 1898 meters

Markedly spacious with its citrus acidity. Cranberry, orange and hints of hazelnut lead the way to a clean finish.

In season at time of review.

Coffee Review: Heliconias Bourbon Coffee from Intelligentsia

Once you open the bag, you are hit with an clean smelling coffee that reminds me of the inside of a private coffee shop. It is very inviting and lacks the strong odor sometimes found with darker coffees. It is a high quality roasted bean and you can even smell the hints of hazelnut.

As I took in the experience while enjoying this coffee in my cup, I took some notes as the tasting began.

Intelligentsia Bourbon Coffee

This Heliconias Bourbon blend from Intelligentsia is very clean. For a medium blend, there is no sharp bitterness or after taste. Your mouth almost feels clean after it rolls off your tongue and down your throat. The after taste is light…so much so that you do not feel like you have extreme coffee breath or a coating on your teeth after you are finished. Just a pleasurable experience all the way around.

When I started searching for distinct tastes within the the brew, I noticed a hint of orange peel. You know that taste when you get too close to the peel? It’s there and while that might not be good while you are eating the orange, it compliments the taste of this coffee very well for those that like coffee blends that lean more towards the citrus end of the scale (not nutty).

Like the other Intelligentsia coffees I have tried to date, this Bourbon blend should appeal to a wide variety of coffee drinkers. With its clean feel, inviting aroma and medium body…you can serve this up to just about anyone and feel confident they will enjoy a cup. For those of you that like the darker, nuttier blends, this may not be the one you are looking for. While there is some hazelnut backend, this blend does lean more towards citrus/fruit.

Overall, another great blend from Intelligentsia.

I’ve never tried this blend but it sounds real good – especially for winter time with this light citrus touch. Thank you for introducing it here!
